The Emergence of Authenticated Encryption

Abstract: In this talk I'll trace the history of authenticated encryption (AE), exploring why it emerged, how it evolved, and some of the schemes that have been offered for achieving it.  I'll describe a notion of AE that I recently put forward, "robust" AE, and a scheme, AEZ, for achieving it. AE is rare topic for having supported a strong theory/practice dialog around identifying what the "right" problem is.
